About Squeekly

Is the reading speed test free?

Yes. The speed test and the four starting checks are free and need no account. Your results stay on this device and come along into your account when you join. Take the reading speed test

How much time does it take?

About five minutes a day. Short sessions spread over days beat one long sitting for memory (Cepeda et al., 2006), and they’re much easier to start on a busy day.

Will it help me remember what I read?

That’s the point. Every read ends with a few questions, and recall checks bring the passage back a day and a week later. Pulling something back from memory keeps it better than reading it again (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006), so remembering is part of the practice, not an afterthought. How to remember what you read

How do I join?

Squeekly opens to readers in small groups while it’s in early access. Leave your email at the foot of this page and your invite comes as soon as there’s a place for you. A speed test you take first comes along into your account. Get early access

Is there a phone app?

It’s coming to iPhone and Android. Until then, Squeekly works in your phone’s browser, and an account keeps your progress in step across your devices.

Is Squeekly good for ADHD?

It was designed with easily distracted readers in mind: five-minute rounds, one task on screen, instant feedback, and text you can make bigger, wider or calmer. It’s a reading trainer, not a treatment, and it fits alongside whatever already helps you. Reading with ADHD

Can it help with brain rot?

It’s built as the opposite of a feed: five calm minutes, one text, no scroll, and questions that show what actually stuck. Attention is a habit, and short daily practice is how you rebuild it. Brain rot and attention span

About reading speed

What is a good reading speed?

Most adults read about 238 words a minute (Brysbaert, 2019). Speed only counts if you understood, so Squeekly shows words understood per minute: your reading speed times the share of questions you got right. Average reading speed

Why don’t you promise a speed?

Because a fast read you can’t remember is wasted time. Big speed-reading promises don’t hold up in research, so we measure your real speed together with how much you understood, and show you every gain. Does speed reading work?

Can you stop subvocalizing?

You don’t need to. Everyone hears the words in their head, and readers who try to silence that voice understand less of hard text. Squeekly trains the faster route from a word’s spelling to its meaning instead. More on subvocalization
